The Prussian queen Louise (1776 - 1810), a wife of Friedrich Wilhelm III, was one of the most famous women of her epoch. Plenty romantic stories and legends still shroud her short life. L u i z e . p n g In winter of 1807, when Prussia suffered crushing attacks of Napoleon's army, Royal couple traveled along the Curonian Spit to Klaipeda, where Prussian government, state archive and treasury were moved.
It is said, that Louise, wistfully looking at snowy dunes of the Spit, using a diamond of her ring, scratched on a windowpane of a hotel a rueful stanza of J. W. Gëtte. Living in Klaipeda she was honoured for her goodness, care about education and sincere aid to poor. However even there in the province, she remained a true queen, aristocrat. During negotiations with emperor of Russia Alexander I about future of Prussia, Napoleon couldn't refrain from a remark: "Prussian queen is remarkably fascinating. It inspires a desire to lay a crown at her feet instead of taking it away."
